On My Way Home Again

The ride back from Toksook Bay on May Day, 2008 was anything but spring-like. I remember as kids bringing flowers to our teacher and even somewhere is a vague memory of a maypole of ribbons being woven by dancing. (not in my youth- and only as an observer)

This is a view from the plane on our way from Toksook Bay to Newtok. The pilot, Henry from Toksook Bay, pointed out a huge herd of muskox on the icy hillside. There were probably 50 or so on the west side, out of the wind. He also said he was going fishing and showed the place on the ice where he had his stuff. Too cold for me.

I took my backpacking layers this time to test them in arctic conditions. Yep, my 1 pound Mountain Hardwear down jacket and Marmot PreCip raincoat were great- even in -20 windchill and blowing snow. I had lots of pockets for a camera, candy bar, face mask and gloves, too. I think they were good purchases. Paul and I are hoping to go out hammock camping this weekend.....not sure where yet.

Mekoryuk and Tununak were my other visits. I am glad to be going home, but I'll miss all the people I've met. Let me tell you, there's no place like a village for laughing and enjoying life.
