Flooding in Fairbanks

It is really flooded in Fairbanks. The rivers are raging. Some teenagers took advantage of the high water to jet-ski in big water. They went between the trees and the road on the overflow. It made it really fun for the people that were walking along the road. I thought they might hit some of the junk in the river- logs, whole trees, trash and everything you can think of that might wash into the river. Fortunately, it didn't happen while I was watching. It's amazing our species has survived! The top picture is Casey by the Chena River and the bottom picture is Paul by the Tanana. It's still raining so there may be more on this topic. Check out the state website for up to date info and pictures.

Casey went on the 2 bit tour of Fairbanks. He's here to work at the MacLaren River Lodge for a few months. We saw the reindeer and muskox and botanical garden at the University, Pioneer Park, the pipeline, downtown and Creamer's Field. He's also getting a lot of sleep and is coming over tonight for a cookout. Needless to say, we'll be eating inside.

We had a discussion yesterday about the effects of drinking soda pop on teeth. Paul maintains that diet soda doesn't hurt teeth because there is no sugar, but I think that the carbonation also reeks havoc. I have been vindicated. Apparently besides the fact that drinking soda fills you up so you don't drink healthy beverage, the carbonation is acidic and it erodes the tooth enamel. It is particularly bad when you are very thirsty because it is not diluted with saliva. Also, it is widely known that carbonation leaches calcium from bones and teeth and is a major contributor to osteoporosis. Stay tuned and I'll give you the research.

Somewhere the sun is shining, but not here.

Hi Patty,

even though you said you were posting a photo of Casey, it was a shock to actually see him by the pipeline. The flooding is amazing - I'll send the blog to Bill in NOLA - he appreciates the impact of flooding.

I love the commentary on photo jamming - very Erin!!

I love returning to Detroit & all of Michigan including the thrill of legally driving 70 miles an hour through the city!!

thanks for all your hard work on the reunion and helping Casey adjust to Alaska.
