I did make it into Hoonah today, in spite of the rain and wind tearing up Juneau. The flight on a Cessna 180 took us mostly over the rainy, cloudy ocean, but there was no wind. Mary, the gal next to me, leaned onto my little seat so that she didn't have to look out the window. She'd warned me that she was terrified of flying in small planes. I have a healthy respect, but I have to assume that the pilot doesn't want to die either and that he or she is qualified for the job. It is always a risk, but so is driving or riding, or even walking around a city. The landing was smooth and Glenda picked me up.
The big news around Hoonah is the giant bear that is stalking the neighborhoods. The guys in Auntie Nina's coffee shop speculated that it isn't hibernating yet because it is still hungry since there were so few berries. Ominous. I won't be doing much walking after dark around here because I am staying at "Wind and Sea Inn", right in the bear neighborhood. Besides, with a serious cold, I will be taking Nyquil and heading to bed shortly. This inn has wifi and a modest breakfast, but no delightful view like last time. It's already dark by 6 pm so I guess that's fine.
My schedule tomorrow is to teach model writing lessons all morning and prep for the Family Math Night tomorrow night. It should be a fun and busy day. On Friday, I'll be working with teachers on writing- in two different inservices. Glenda's changing my reservations to go home on Friday night instead of Saturday....fine by me. It would be nice to be home on Halloween.
My big recreational news is that I set up an account on Trail Journals. I haven't posted yet, but when I do, it will be under the trail names of Pound Hound and Garage Man. Curious? Check out the journals starting about Tuesday to see our gear, hear our plans and read about our trail names.
I hope to get some "wintery" pictures of Hoonah tomorrow. Stay tuned.
