Why People Live Here and Other Ruminations

My toes are finally unclenching from a long walk tonight down to the mighty Yukon River to see the liquor store, sunset and Don Young's house. The kids were out in full force, sliding down any slight rise and wearing, well, whatever they've had on all day. Parents tied sleds onto the back of snowmachines and pulled their kids all over town. Teenagers are bunched up on corners fixing up their machines, chest thumping and celebrating Friday night.

The penchant for graffiti never ceases to amaze me. Does a spray painted "Jesus Loves You" under a bridge help bring sinners to the fold? Is it a show of bravado? Is it a question?

Don Young's house overlooking the river certainly reminds us that Veco didn't fix up his house. His daughter's house next door (not pictured) is a big expensive 2 story home, but the real value here is not just the million dollar view, but the dredging and dike that was built up to fortify the banks to protect homes along the river. Who funded that? You guessed it- we all did.
