Smoke, Smells and Smiles

It took me awhile to get going this morning since I attended to phone calls and computer business. I rode my bike up to Zachs for lunch with my 2 favorite FAA employees (one retired). The Chinese Pork Loin Sandwich was delicious with coleslaw, onions and spicy sauce.

It's odd that something named "loin" could taste good. It has something to do with our movement away from killing, catching or digging our own food so that the graphic language has lost its meaning if it is meat. My children don't want me to refer to their birth as "springing from my loins"....whatever! (Re: Brave New World)

A friend celebrated 2 years of hard work in the UAF SLATE program tonight and she invited me to attend as part of her family. I had fun making a bucketful of asaliaq to bring. Nothing like fried dough to make the house smell good. The potluck buffet was memorable, showcasing Native foods since most of the Master's degree and Ph.D students were Yup'ik. There was muktuk, moose soup, caribou spaghetti, dried fish, several types of akutaq, salmon strips, and an assortment of non-Native foods as well. What a feast! The short program recognized the students and was done in Yup'ik language as well as English. Congrats, Erin K for your hard work and thanks for inviting me to share in the celebration. Happy retirement, Dr. J after many years of teaching, researching, writing, supervising theses (no, not feces!) students and reading to kids.

I scooted over to the Schiable Auditorium to watch Arctic Dance, the movie of the life of Mardy Murie. What a remarkable women! I don't agree that the lands of Alaska should be locked up, but rather that they be conserved, not preserved. Regardless, her efforts continued until she was 95. I hope I'm still paying attention when I'm that age.

The smoke was very bad today. I saw lots of masks over faces in the gloomy "nuclear winter" atmosphere. The wildfire in Minto Flats is blazing on making the perfect truffle hunting woods. In the meantime, my eyes sting and my car is covered in ash.
