We Jammin'

Boiling up the raspberries, strawberries, pectin and sugar.
Some of the jars are for freezer jam and don't need sealing.
All the jars sealed and the fruit looks great.

My neighbor and I went out for more berries and she and I and her son, Marcos made jam. I plan to share it this year- hence the small jars.

This week I started working for MCC (Math in a Cultural Context). Our retreat was at Denali. We worked long hours, but the setting was glorious. Karen, LuAnne and I walked from the Denali Bluffs hotel along the river, through the woods on the Jonesville trail to the Visitor's Center, and then back through the Riley Creek area. It was about 5 miles and really reminded how easy it is to lose muscle strength. The aerobic benefits of an 1100 mile hike remained however and so I didn't get breathless. We didn't see any wildlife except lots more berries and some wild looking young people, maybe worshippers of the Christopher McCandless lifestyle with the exception of a premature death.

At the visitor center, we went in late to see a movie which turned out to only cover Denali in the winter. We decided that since it was winter for 9 months of the year, and only the Park Service employees had access to the Park during that time, we probably didn't miss the other seasons.
The road and railroad cross the Nenana River, famous for whitewater rafting trips.

The interpretive displays at the Denali Park Visitor Center.

The drive home from Denali on Friday was potentially hazardous. I'd heard rumors that the Parks Hwy was closed due to smoke, but it really wasn't too bad. The rain the night before had slowed some of the massive area fires. Many planes had been cancelled though during the week because of poor visibility so many people were stranded in Fairbanks.
