After nearly 25 years of owning this land, we will finally have a structure on it (other than the outhouse). Paul wants to build a timber-frame house, but with no nails and 20 x 24, that will take years. In the meantime, the tent platform has given way for a summer cabin.
Here are some of the preliminary steps to building this temporary, uninsulated, 16 x 12 ft. cabin (not counting the buying and hauling of all the materials and tools:
select and clear the site, dig the foundation post holes, cut-peel-paint the posts, bury and level them, lay across the floor beams and all the floor joists on 16 inch centers, cover with and staple down chicken wire, lay down insulation, cover the surface with a vapor barrier, lay out the floor (tongue and groove plywood), paint the floor, frame each wall and raise them one at a time framing in for windows and doors, raise the roof beam, cut-peel-put up the supporting beam in the center of the cabin, cut and put up the support beams to support the roof overhang, put up the rafters, cover with tar paper and that's where are are as of today.
I've got arms like a gorilla now from hefting plywood. I'm sure the exercise is doing me good, but I'm not sure if the extra food from being so hungry is cancelling it out.
