A Harrowing Night

We moved into our apartments yesterday.  I was so happy to spread out my new jigsaw puzzle.  The bed was so comfy after sleeping on a wrestling mat for the last 6 days.

I read a chapter in my book (At Home, Bill Bryson), checked my emails one last time, played Word Cookies and turned out the light.  Within 10 minutes as I was almost asleep, I heard a soft "whup, whup, whup" and a good-sized brown bat swooped down over my bed.

The bat was about the size of my shoe, not counting wings.  I grabbed my sleeping bag and ran for the door as I hollered in surprise, disgust and fright.  When I turned on the light by the door, the bat was circling the room.  I closed the door, leaving the light on and went downstairs.

I was still in my pjs, but I grabbed my hat and jacket, put on shoes no socks and snatched the keys.  I headed to the school through the wet grass and shadowy twilight.  It was about 11 pm.

I slept on a mat in a classroom but not very much!  No glasses, no pillow, no comforting headlamp.

I girded my loins and went back for all my stuff at the first light of day...about 6.  I was completely moved back into the school by 8.  When I went back to the school at lunchtime to drag over a decent mattress, the stench hit me.  Good news:  I haven't lost my sense of smell (no Covid!).

I Zoomed all day, made stuffed cabbage for dinner and now I'm watching a Coop Extension Zoom on making cheese.

Maybe more playful tomorrow.

“Intrepid” is the word I always think of when I think of you, Pat! I hope the bats are completely moved out ASAP❤️ (Cousin Susie)
