There are just a few times in a village when no one is out. In the early morning and when it rains after a long spell of sun. This Sunday morning was just such a time and I broke out my umbrella and took a stroll. I did see 2 guys standing under their roof overhang smoking...an endearing Alaska tradition- smoking outside the house. I think it's caused many a person to give up smoking because today it's not cold, but soon.... One of them was a parent I hadn't met yet so that was productive.
You can't have green without a little rain.
A closer look at the church next door. Kinda spooky view of the onion dome in the rain. Definitely out of service. Does anyone else see the head of a Cossack with a Ukrainian party hat on? Okay then.
There's a story here somewhere. This is at the end of the road figuratively and literally.
If you click on the photo to enlarge it, you'll see the runway at the end of the photo. The village is laid out in a grid with a few curves instead of sharp intersections. You are looking at the entire width of the village down a "side road". Folks are pretty careful to drive on the roads and not bushwhack, but like England, you can get directly to any other habitation from anywhere in the village by using a well established 4-wheeler trail or a road.
Looking at the slough on a rainy day. It doesn't have the spunk of the main channel but it's definitely deep enough for boats.
The classroom before students came the first day. If you're a teacher, or a former teacher, it's okay to give a gasp. We had to remove everything that couldn't be disinfected daily. Cork boards, charts, flags, books, paper, all had to be removed. Students can have individual materials that only they can handle but they need to be in wipeable containers.
In your mind, please contrast this stark environment with the world outside today. Just sayin'.
