I spent a productive day in Toksook, surprising since I only got 5 hours of sleep. Besides the fire alarm guys setting off the alarms at 12:30 am, my mattress went flat overnight so I ended up sleeping on the floor with only a mattress skin between me and linoleum.
I printed off the state formative assessments for several of my teachers, but unfortunately, it made a pile of paper about 3 inches thick causing alarm from the teacher whose classroom housed the printer. Sorry, Marty. I also went through Jim Mac Dairmid's book and made an index card pile of activities for teachers to use to teach vocabulary besides the usual discussion, model lessons, goal review, etc.
Early this afternoon, as I was getting ready to come over to Tununak, there was a fire drill. That's always exciting. Then Joe Bill (see photos) drove me over on the school district snowmachine. He looks bulky in the pictures because he has my computer under his coat. He told me it would take about an hour, then laughed and said about 30 minutes both ways. It was a clear day inspite of no planes due to Bethel weather. It's hard to remember how intimidating storms can be even on such a short ride when it's so beautiful.
When I got here, there was a Newtok basketball team here that has been weathered since last Friday. The coach left by snowmachine last night, but the chaperone and 4 boys were left here due to liability. I shared my enchiladas and cookies with them, and showed them how to use the washer and dryer. The only thing more challenging then the enforced boredom interspersed with vain hope of getting out is being weathered in with a team of students.
Skype, my new best friend was available, so I showed the coach how to use it. Thanks Kale, for always being available. There was some hair envy going on though, so I guess there is a down side of video.
I should be here one more night and only one night before heading to Bethel and home. Maybe I won't get to Mekoryuk and Atmau this trip. Sorry, guys!
