AT Dreamin'

So, we are seriously planning our thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail for February. The plans fall into 3 categories- gear to carry, logistics on the trail and details here in Fairbanks. Obviously, some details are more fun to plan than others.

As you know, we already bought an iPhone to help with family contacts, emergencies on the trail and finding resupplies. Decisions such as water purification are fun to think about, but I think we'll take our Katahdin pump filter because we have it, it works and it's not too heavy. So, our decisions for gear will be made by asking, 1) is it the lightest available? 2) is it inexpensive? 3) does it have multiple purposes? 4) is it rugged enough to last? and finally 5) is there a fallback if it doesn't work out?

We bought a "Food Saver" to repack our fish and also to start putting together some of our favorite dry meals. Ron (thanks!) is going to be our supply guy from Chicago, so we'll be able to leave some stuff with him for mailing to us.

Back to Earth....I mowed the lawn tonight so that the leaves would get sucked up into the mower instead of having to rake. Everything went well until I sucked the sunflowers into the blades and had to stop and make repairs. We put away the boat for the season, but we're hoping to do some camping in a few weeks. Going out when its cold will help us test our gear.
