Lettuce, Potatoes and Beaver

I finally feel retired! I got my first paycheck. We rode our bikes down to the bank to deposit it and took ourselves out to dinner to celebrate. Finally! Money for just outliving the job. It was touch and go for a few years, too.

We dug potatoes yesterday. Paul described it as an Easter egg hunt. We harvested about 20 pounds, but it was obvious from the babies in the roots that we would have had lots more if we'd been able to leave them in the ground longer. It froze last night, so I think we waited as long as we could. We brought them in and put them on plant trays with grid bottoms so they could dry out. They'll be in the dark, cool storage area under the stairs where they should keep for the winter.

On our bike ride, we examined the beaver evidence by the Chena River. The gnawed trees look like pencil tips and we saw the drag marks across the bike path. The local beavers are working overtime to make their lodge.

I'm in the Juneau airport on my way to Hoonah. The sun is shining (at least overhead) and the temp is about 50 or so. I walked over to Donna's for breakfast after my 6am-9:30am flight. Although I haven't been here in at least 6 years, everything looks exactly the same. The small airlines have a nice little corner area for their counters and I'm all checked in. Watch for Hoonah pictures coming soon.
