Freeze Your Face-Off

The first hockey game of the season for the Nanooks was tonight. Yes, we lost. But it was fun getting back into it and I always see people who I haven't seen for awhile- Grant, Matt, Alan, Beth and Bill and so many others.

There is a subculture of kids there who roam and do the mating dance for members of the opposite sex throughout the 2 hours of the hockey game. Efforts along these lines are interspersed with shouts of "You suck" at the ref or the other team or anyone in their way. Ben used to come with us to games and disappear into the crowds, showing up to get money for a hot chocolate and to get a ride home afterwards, seemingly unaware that a game was actually being played.

The efforts at cleaning out the basement is paying off. Paul and I challenged our marriage by rearranging furniture around the remaining piles of old receipts and copies of math papers left to be sorted. The marital truce wasn't called until the end when we sank into the recliners, covered ourselves in blankets and watched the last inning of the World Series.

Be assured, I don't care who wins- I'm never really sure who is playing. My feeling is that games are being played constantly- if you don't like the score or results of one game, not to worry- there will be another one next week. Another pet peeve is the practice of calling a series of games "finals". Final means it's over. Save it for the last game of the season. It's a ruse to get people on the fringe to watch the game.

I've mentally written a 10 minute play for the 8 x 10 short plays for a local competition. I'm going to tell you the basic idea, but I will sue anyone who steals it and writes a better play. The scene is 3 rows on an airplane as people file on for departure. That's all you get. If I win, you'll read it here and you can come.

I've fallen out of the habit of telling you the books I am reading, but it is getting more difficult to find good titles. I just finished The Rope Walk and it was a great book, even for a book club reading. Suffice it to say that it is a relationships book. I am getting more particular though- I brought home 3 books from the library the other day and I am only finishing one of them. The others are trash they are so poorly written. It inspires me to write.

The new hard drive has set me back on all my e-spondence. I don't have iPhoto or Word yet, so I am not downloading pictures or even prepping for the classes and presentations for next week. I hate the last minute stuff, but I'm stuck now.

It will be -15 on Sunday. Time to break out the neck gaiter and long johns.
