I came to Anchorage on Friday to teach a workshop on 2 and 3D geometry. I've had a great time, considering it was mostly work, but there were a few highlights.
Yesterday, Saturday, I left the Captain Cook Hotel about 7:15 am to attempt a walk to the New Sagaya restaurant/grocery store/hipster hangout. As I got further from the downtown hotel area, the roads and sidewalks got more and more slippery. And, in the 15 degree temps with a brisk wind, I think the windchill was handily below zero. I turned around about 2 blocks short of my destination. My thoughts were: If I'm destined to fall and break a leg, I'd rather do it on the AT instead of in a dark alley in Anchorage. I turned around and walked to Starbucks- closed! I guess I need to kick the coffee habit.
Our first session started at 9:00. About 9:10 the building started really shaking from the 5.7 earthquake centered about 120 miles from here. Being on the 10th floor, it was quite scary. We all stood under the doorway per our training. Some guy that works here said that he didn't feel the quake and proceeded down the elevator. Short memory, I guess.
Later that day, when we were sitting in the lobby, one of my coworkers spotted a cockroach on the end table. At the Captain Cook! A hissing cockroach, maybe, but not a roach!
The food was mainly provided by MCC (Math in a Cultural Context), my employer. But our meal out ($20/per diem) was at Sachs. Very expensive. I got a cup of tomato/gorgonzola soup and the bruschetta appetizer for $16. Water to drink. Although everyone ordered modestly, one person's bill was $37.
It snowed in North Carolina last week. I hope that monkey business is over before I get down there to hike. Only 18 more days!

Hey! I felt the same shake. I was at the Sheraton on the 15th floor just a few blocks over. My first earthquake ever. Very cool.
