Yep, you heard it. Governor Palin served hot dogs to Alaskans, today, her last day of work. The park was one big love fest. I've never seen so much makeup, designer clothes and Republican t-shirts. I've never heard so many Southern accents announcing that they are Alaskan. There was one guy holding a sign that said, "Texas Loves Sarah", to which my response is, "Great- she's looking for a new job and now she knows where to go". Another sign said, "Hello, Seldom-Seen Sarah". Two red hat ladies proudly displayed, "We love Sarah" and another t-shirt said, "Don't blame me, I voted McCain-Palin" which seems ironic now that Sarah quit.
Another huge presence was the media interviewing "Joe Peasant". I noticed that they didn't approach anyone on the fringe of the crowd, those of us in blue jeans and public service t's who came for the hot dogs.
For those of you who have never been to the governor's picnic, everyone is invited to go to any or all of the 3 picnics (Fairbanks, Anchorage and this year, Wasilla). There is usually a big tent or two with serving lines on both sides. Everyone was on Sarah's side (just for lunch, not politically) and there was no waiting at the other tent. Local, state and occasionally national politicos delight in serving up the food- hot dogs, bags of chips, watermelon and punch this year. In previous years there was also baked beans and potato salad but those pesky forks make for lots of cleanup. The picnics are totally funded by donations- not public funds. It gives you a chance to meet your elected officials in a personal way. Tony Knowles was especially approachable, sticking around as long as there was some one to talk to him. Regardless of political leanings, it's great fun with lots of music and a chance to rub shoulders with history, albeit, local.
I didn't stick around for the passing of the baton to Sean Parnell. The cameramen staked out all the good seats this morning and I can't suppose she or he will say anything new.
I did have a chance to thank Commissioner Schmidt, the commissioner of the corrections facilities who turned down the newly available lieutenant governor's position to finish the work he's started on prisons. At least there is someone with integrity and work ethic.
I got up early and rode my bike to Graehl Landing to be a KUAC volunteer for the Red/Green Regatta. I helped with traffic to get all 66 vessels unloaded at the 2 boat ramps. They were hilarious and fun. I've gotta do that next year. Some people were in the water before they left the boat ramp. The weather was hot and dry today, unlike most years. They rode from downtown to Alaskaland and throwing water balloons and using water sprayers was expected.
