Birds, Valdez and More

Another great Fairbanks speller worked on the Post Office door repairs.

I just got back from seeing "Julie and Julia", a great movie of relationships, blogging, comfort food and inspiration. That's all I'm going to say, except that Paul enjoyed it also. It also inspired me to come home and blog, recognizing the power of the written word. An interesting point came out about blogs that have always bothered me- they are the ultimate in narcissism....it's all about me. On the other hand, the blogs that are political in nature or evangelizing are totally boring to me, so I think I will continue to mix business with pleasure.

On Tuesday, I went to Valdez with Sue. The weather was great although the colors on the Richardson Highway are brilliantly painted for Fall- reds, oranges and yellows. The passes were gorgeous but the air was brisk and traffic was down.

Once we were in Valdez, we discovered that Sue couldn't get a senior (free) fishing license there- it was a duplicate form, so we couldn't fish. No problem though, we visited with local historian and retired social studies teacher, Dorothy, went to museums, went to the fabric shop, walked around town, bought seafood at Peter Pan and drove around. The ride home on Thursday was also beautiful. It rained only on Wednesday, our only full day in Valdez.

The museum of Old Valdez had a displays on the town located at the old townsite. It was moved after the earthquake in 1964. Dorothy's house where she grew up was moved to the new site.

On Friday morning, I was at Creamer's Field Farmhouse at 6 am with Judy and JoAnne. We walked back to the bird banding station to start a few hours of volunteering. I "shadowed" Judy while we put down the bird nets and later picked birds out, bagged them in cloth bags and brought them to the scientists who band them, take data and release them. We saw lots of orange colored warblers, juncos (my new favorite birds), and a few others including the intrepid black-capped chickadees (who put up a fight every time). It was noted that the birds are showing lots of fat this year. The time went really fast and I plan to go back out on Monday morning. I can't work with the birds until I have shadowed 3 times, so I'm hoping to do that before the end of September when banding ends.

Some friends and I (picture of Bev) went back out to our best berry spot and picked cranberries and blueberries. Amazingly, they are still plentiful.

We went back to Bev's house and had a yummy lunch of fruit salad, cucumbers and tomatoes, pasta soup and an open faced zucchini fritter sandwich (see recipe).

For the last 2 days, Paul and I have been working on the basement, painting, reorganizing and preparing the space for the new apartment we are making. His broken rib is still bothering him and I'm guessing today's work of lifting down books from the top shelf will cause him some pain tonight and tomorrow. Hey, don't look at me! He just can't tell himself no.

I have another trip this week- only to Anchorage though and I'll even be paid, but I plan to go with friends to see the Lion King. Hacuma Matata. The first week in October though, I will be going to Mountain Village in the Lower Yukon School District and you know I'll love that.
