I spent 2 days at the Kuspuk School District inservice in Aniak. I'll add it in on the next blog entry, out of order, since I was blocked from posting, but journalled anyway.
The trip back from Aniak was uneventful- just the way I like it. I did see some action at the luggage carousel in Fairbanks. There was a group of tourists who were aggressively pursuing their bags. One old guy grabbed at every enormous bag that went by and was repeatedly dragged along the conveyor knocking down or pushing away all the bystanders. Once I made the mistake of pulling off a bag that he reluctantly released. I told him, "Here's your bag" and he looked indignant and said, "That's NOT my bag". He must have done this maneuver about 10 times. There were many unanswered questions, like, "why doesn't he seem to know what his bag looks like?" and "why did he pack so much that his bag is the size of a body bag for a man the size of minature gazelle?". I eventually waited for my bag in a no drag zone. Alas, to no avail. My bag had more fun than I did on the trip home and extended its visit to Anchorage. I picked it up the next day for 3,000 bonus miles on my mileage plan. Ironically, the tag read, "Rush" when it arrived.
Virginia and Tim were already in Fairbanks and we drove out Chena Hot Springs Rd to soak at the Hot Springs. They were gearing up for the energy fair (we're missing it this year). We had a leisurely soak with the Koreans from Fairbanks, but it was really too warm (65-70) to really enjoy the hot water. We spotted about 4 moose enroute.
The next day we drove out the Elliott Hwy to our land and hiked back on the muskeggy trail. It was a good test of Paul's endurance with a broken rib, but we all took hiking poles and walked slowly. We had a hotdog cookout over an open fire and you know how good that tastes. We did a brief walkabout to locate the spring, but stopped short of hiking down the shallow ravine due to infirmity.
We ended the beautiful day with dinner at the new Cuban food restaurant, Azucar. It was amazingly nottoo- not too much, not too spicy, not too expensive.
Regrettably, Virginia and Tim left today for Denali. Good company- good fun.
