Get My Drift

A cold weather thermometer. Don't like the temp? Drive around until you find one you like.

When I left on Sunday, it had warmed up slightly to -31, so balmy Hooper Bay looked good for a short time. The storm blew in on Monday and I haven't been out for 2 days. The whole town has been resculpted with snow drifts on top of the glace ice. The ride to the airstrip for the journey to Pilot Station, hopefully tomorrow, will be by snowmachine, although on Sunday it was by truck.

I'd like to post some new pictures of this very picturesque place, but the timing is tricky since there is still only about 3 hours of daylight and unfortunately they are during school hours when I'm expected to work.

Entrepreneurs out on the corner at -35 degrees.

On the small plane (Grant Aviation) leaving Bethel, I was talking to a fellow traveler when we noticed that the plane turned around and went back to the Bethel airport. Avgas was streaming out of the wing fuel tank and black smoke was trailing the plane. The pilot checked and pulled the dummy string out of a sealing gasket. Did he refuel? Heck no, we just took off again.

Our new MacBook should be arriving soon. My skype calls will soon be accompanied by video. Lucky you.

Teaching practice I abhor: denying kids gym time for not bringing in homework, making kids be silent during lunch, rewarding a completed worksheet with another one, telling students that they always hated math too, no laughter, punishing a whole class for the behavior of a few, failure to recognize and/or respond to the individual needs of the kids.

Good times in Hooper Bay: making abacus with chenille stems and pony beads, storytelling with 3rd graders, playing Match Mine at inservice, working with Virginia on Yup'ik math translations, putting up calendar centers, discovering a treasure trove of math manipulatives in the storage room, picking out new earrings made by William, having 14 people sign up for credit for the inservice I presented, buying (and eating) a Rollo from the school store, getting emails from my family.
