We have been enjoying our language practice. I understand now that Chinese words translated into English vary greatly in spelling, even in the same signs. "J" and "Ch" are used interchangeably, "B" and "P" are the same sound here and "Y" often shows up in front of vowels arbitrarily. The most difficult sounds to hear are tonal, often resulting in changing the meaning of the word entirely.
We really like the signs that use English creatively (see photos). They sort of hint at some meaning, but suggest many possible interpretations. The t-shirts are outrageous!
We have already learned a smattering of essential words and symbols. Unfortunately, they don't match up very well. It is amazing how lingual Chinese people are....everyone speaks at least 2 languages. We could learn from this.
